Library and Information Technology Student Guidelines

Updated October 12, 2026

Please read over and adhere to these guidelines to ensure that you progress through the program smoothly, prepare yourself effectively for your future career, and graduate without any obstacles.

Grades

  1. See policy E2008, below, for definitions of “good standing”, “academic probation” and “academic suspension”.
  2. You must attain a C grade in all courses in order to count them towards the diploma. This applies to LIBR and non-LIBR courses. (Note that this requirement differs from other programs at Langara).
  3. Failing a core course three times could result in dismissal from the program.
  4. According to the Student Code of Conduct, undue demands for grade revisions are inappropriate and unacceptable.

Courseload

  1. In person students are required to take 3-5 courses per Fall and Spring semester. This is a full time program.
  2. Online students may take 1-5 courses per Fall and Spring semester. This is a part-time program and there is no minimum requirement. Online students taking 3 or more courses would be considered full time.
  3. If you need to take a Fall or Spring semester off, you should let the department chair know.

Timeline

  1. You are encouraged to proceed through the program as quickly as possible in order to graduate with a current diploma and skill set. Two to three years is ideal and spending no longer than 5 years in the program is strongly recommended.
  2. If you are still in the program 5 years after your start date you will be asked to re-take courses with significant updates to content or technology.

Professionalism

  1. As this is a professional program, you are expected to demonstrate professional behaviour throughout your time in the program. Please see the LIBR Professionalism and Participation Guidelines (https://langaralibtech.opened.ca/824-2/) for details.

Respect

  1. You are expected to behave with respect towards faculty/staff, fellow students, and yourselves, online and in person.
  2. Ours is an inclusive field. You are expected to welcome and encourage diverse voices and demonstrate the following behaviours:
  • Open-mindedness
  • Curiosity before judgment
  • Cultural literacy
